Biography of Carl Barks

The Good Duck Artist: Carl Barks

  (Carl Barks, March 27, 1901 – August 25, 2000)

Carl Barks was a famous cartoonist and author. Partly with The Walt Disney Company’s animation department and partly with publishers who made cartoons for Walt Disney Company. Barks began working for the Disney Company in 1935, one year after Donald Duck’s debut. He was part of the duck team as an assistant and in-betweener with director Jack King, Chuck Couch, Harry Reeves and Jack Hannah. He helped in the making og cartoons such as Donald’s Nephews (1938), Donald’s Cousin Gus (1939), Timber (1941), The Vanishing Private (1942) and The Plastics Inventor (1944).

Carl Barks later got work at Western Publishing, where he from the very beginning hoped to create new characters, but he was only asked to make Donald Duck comics. Early on, he did however make a number of series with Barney Bear, a bear with the same choleric temperament as the duck. Barks drew comic stories for the next three decades. Besides giving Donald Duck a more comfortable and less irascible personality, he surrounded him with a series of eccentric and colourful characters such as Scrooge McDuck – the richest duck in the world. And also Gladstone Gander – Donald’s incredibly lucky cousin, the inventor Gyro Gearloose, The Beagle Boys, sorceress Magica Dispell and the Junior Woodchucks.

Carl Barks retired in 1966, but he continued to write some stories for Western. He also began making oil paintings with scenes from his stories. In 1980 he began a collaborating with the publisher Another Rainbow and later he started his own gallery/art studio called the Carl Barks Studio. Through these two units, Barks’ art was made available to the many fans who could not afford one of Barks’ expensive oil paintings. His fans were given the opportunity to buy signed, numbered and limited edition books, lithographs, serigraphs, bronzes, porcelain figurines and many other interesting items and collectibles.
